Road Tax: Vehicle Excise Duty (VED)

All vehicles registered in the UK are required to be taxed if your vehicle is used or kept on a public road. The tax is paid annually with the cost dependent on the engine size, fuel type and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of your vehicle.

Road tax is split into bands, the lower the emission, the lower the road tax of your vehicle (Band A is the lowest and Band M is the highest). You can find out the tax band of your vehicle on the government DFT (Department for Transport) website.

When registering a new car, low emission band A-D cars are free for the first year then a standard rate thereafter. However new cars registered after 1st April 2017 will be under the new road tax scheme. The new VED tax system will only be free for vehicles with ZERO emissions (like the Nissan LEAF electric car). All other cars will pay a flat rate of £140 per year.
